BUILDING BETTER HABITS

Week 1 Focus: Hydration
At UNITY Embsay in Skipton, we talk a lot about training for life, not just for short-term results. That philosophy doesn’t stop when you leave the gym floor. Nutrition and lifestyle habits play a huge role in how you feel, how you perform, and how consistently you’re able to show up for yourself.
That’s exactly why we’re running our 4-Week Habit Building Nutrition Challenge at UNITY Embsay.
This isn’t a restrictive diet. There are no calorie targets, weigh-ins, or “all or nothing” rules. Instead, this challenge is about building simple, sustainable habits that stack over time. Habits that support your training, your energy levels, and your long-term health.
Each week has a clear focus, allowing you to build momentum without overwhelm. And it all starts with one of the most underrated (yet powerful) habits of all: hydration.
Why Habit Building Matters
Most people don’t struggle because they lack motivation. They struggle because they try to change everything at once. Sustainable progress comes from small, repeatable actions that fit into real life.
Research consistently shows that habit-based approaches are more effective than short bursts of extreme behaviour. When you focus on what you can do daily, rather than what you need to “be perfect” at, consistency follows and results come as a by-product.
Our 4-week challenge is designed around this principle:
- One habit per week
- Clear, achievable actions
- Progress over perfection
Week 1: Hydration — The Foundation Habit
Before we talk about food quality, portion sizes, or meal timing, we start with hydration. Why? Because hydration affects everything.
Even mild dehydration can impact:
- Energy levels
- Concentration and mood
- Physical performance
- Recovery
- Appetite regulation
In fact, studies show that losing as little as 1–2% of body weight through fluid loss can lead to noticeable reductions in physical and cognitive performance. Many people walk around under-hydrated without realising it.
Key Hydration Facts You Should Know
1. Water supports performance and strength
Muscles are made up of around 75% water. When you’re under-hydrated, strength, endurance and coordination can all suffer. If training feels harder than usual, hydration is often a missing piece.
2. Hydration impacts recovery
Water helps transport nutrients around the body and remove metabolic waste. Proper hydration supports muscle repair, joint health and overall recovery between sessions.
3. Thirst isn’t always a reliable signal
By the time you feel thirsty, you’re often already mildly dehydrated. Relying solely on thirst can mean you’re consistently playing catch-up, especially if you train regularly.
4. Hydration affects hunger
Dehydration is commonly mistaken for hunger. Improving fluid intake can help with appetite awareness and reduce unnecessary snacking, particularly in the afternoon.
5. The UK climate still dehydrates you
Even without hot weather, indoor heating, exercise, caffeine and busy schedules all increase fluid needs. You don’t need to be sweating buckets to need more water.
What We’re Asking You to Do This Week
During Week 1 of the challenge, the goal is not perfection it’s awareness and consistency.
Participants are encouraged to:
- Carry a water bottle daily
- Increase water intake gradually
- Create hydration “anchors” by drinking 500ml with breakfast, lunch, dinner and training
- Notice how hydration affects energy, focus, and training sessions
There is no one-size-fits-all target. Body size, activity levels and lifestyle all matter. The aim is simply to drink more consistently than you currently do and build a habit you can maintain.

Why We Start Here
Hydration is a key habit. When people hydrate better, they often:
- Sleep better
- Train better
- Feel more energised
- Make better food choices
It’s a small change that creates a ripple effect which is exactly what this challenge is about.
What Comes Next
Each week of the challenge builds on the last, layering habits in a way that feels manageable and realistic. By the end of four weeks, you will have a toolkit of habits they can continue long after the challenge finishes.
This is not about a “before and after.”
It’s about building confidence, consistency and control around nutrition, the same way we approach training at UNITY Embsay.
If you’re ready to feel better, fuel your training and build habits that actually last, this challenge is for you.
